NACD Board Leadership Conference NACD Chapter System

Portland I Director Roundtable: Social Media

May 16, 2017
Portland, OR

The rapid development of social media over the past few years has not only revolutionized the way we communicate with each other personally and professionally, it has also transformed the business environment and in the process changed the way companies market to customers, the way they deal with employees, and the way they differentiate themselves in the marketplace.

Social media can be a powerful tool for business development and it can be a source of "instantaneous" harm. Customers, investors, employees, suppliers, competitors and others can comment on a wide variety of topics pertinent to a company on social media platforms, and thereby affect a firm's reputation - positively or negatively. Fewer than 10% of boards report feeling that they fully understand social media;and only 33% of boards get expert monitoring of their company’s social media presence.

As directors and audit committee members, it is important to understand the risks and opportunities surrounding social media.  Attend this session and we will explore what the best prepared boards do, as expectations for social media participation continue to evolve.
